Article by: Paula Sandy

SUNY Erie Community College President Dr. Dan Hocoy today announced the names of five SUNY Erie students who are recipients of the 2019 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. The students were honored by State University of New York Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson during a celebration for all SUNY student award winners in Albany on April 24.

The 2019 SUNY Erie honorees include:

Fahmo Abdullahi, Buffalo, Liberal Arts & Science – General Studies.
Kyle Harris
, Buffalo, General Studies.
Kevin Joseph
, Buffalo, General Studies.
Michael Malama
, Depew, Business Administration.
Ahmad Rashid
, Buffalo, General Studies.

President Hocoy said this year’s honorees were selected because they have led and implemented initiatives that will have a lasting impact on SUNY Erie students, as well as the community. “Our 2019 Chancellor Award winners have successfully worked to address the challenges facing our student populations today, including food insecurity and tutoring needs, while also volunteering in the community representing the College. Their dedication to service is truly commendable,” he said.

The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence was created in 1997 to recognize students who have best demonstrated, and have been recognized for, the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, campus involvement, or career achievement. It is the highest honor bestowed upon a student by his or her SUNY college or university. This year, 210 students from 64 campuses received award recognition. SUNY Erie’s awardees received a framed certificate and a medallion, which will be worn at commencement on May 22.
