Catering and Event Planning

While many of the courses satisfy the requirements for essential business knowledge and running a business, the purpose of the program is to provide a reinforcement of culinary skills that will aid the participant in the pursuit of owning a small culinary based event business. The Catering and Special Event Certificate is designed to assist the student who wishes to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to meet the entrepreneurial goal of becoming a caterer or special event planner.

Program Competencies

Upon graduating with a Certificate in Catering and Event Planning, the graduate will be able to:

  • demonstrate the technical skills necessary to produce quality food in a professional kitchen at an entry-level position;
  • demonstrate human relations skills relating to the culinary and hospitality industry such as communicating, training, recognizing diversity, evaluating, delegating, planning and organizing with sufficient skill to be hired at an entry-level management position;
  • demonstrate an understanding of the pairing, preparation and service of wines, beers and spirits in a hospitality operation;
  • demonstrate an understanding of sanitation as it applies to the hospitality industry by passing the National Restaurant Association Serve-Safe test;
  • demonstrate proficiency with common business practices within the foodservice industry including inventory, menu planning, cost control and food purchasing; and
  • demonstrate computer literacy as it applies to the hospitality industry.
