Placement testing is required of all entering full and part-time matriculated students and those entering a certificate program, unless they have been waived from the placement test. SUNY Erie Community College offers the ACCUPLACER® (English and math) and CELSA (EAL English) placement tests. The results of these tests will place you in math, English or EAL classes for which you are best prepared and in which you are most likely to succeed.
The following tests are administered:
Math All students requiring the math portion of the exam, will begin with ACCUPLACER® Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics (QAS) and if you score below 233 on QAS, you will be automatically be directed to the Next Generation Arithmetic exam. (untimed multiple-choice questions)
EnglishStudents requiring the English portion of the exam will take the ACCUPLACER® Next Generation Reading Comprehension (untimed multiple-choice questions) and if you score below 256 in Reading Comprehension, you will be automatically directed to WritePlacer (essay of 300+ words, allowed 60 minutes).
EAL (English as an Additional Language) Students who are dominant in a language other than English will take the Combined English Language Skills Assessment (CELSA) and an Essay for English course placement. ACCUPLACER® Listening is administered to determine Oral/Aural course placement. (CELSA 45 minutes, Essay –allowed 60 minutes and Listening is untimed.)
No appointment is required. Students should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to noted start time. Photo ID is required and you must know your student ID number (found on your acceptance letter).
Students are encouraged to review study materials prior to testing.

Free Test Preparation WorkshopsThe Pre-Collegiate and R.I.S.E. (Readying Incoming Students for Excellence) Programs prepare students to successfully complete the ACCUPLACER computer-based placement testing prior to their enrollment in SUNY Erie college classes. Both programs are available at the three SUNY Erie Community College campuses and are designed to work around busy schedules.

A signed request for Release of ACCUPLACER Results must be submitted to the Placement Testing Office. There is a $5 charge to students who have previously attended SUNY Erie and a $20 charge to students who have never attended SUNY Erie. (Certified Check or money order is required) Upon receipt of request with payment, SUNY Erie will forward your results to the identified academic institution within five (5) business days.
Remote testing for out-of-town students provides the option of testing at another academic institution if you reside more than a two-hour drive from a SUNY Erie campus. Please complete the Off-Campus Placement Testing Form. A SUNY Erie placement testing representative will contact the proctor to set up the details of the remote ACCUPLACER test. It is up to you to identify a testing center or academic institution in your area willing to proctor the ACCUPLACER exam. Any proctoring fee incurred with remote testing is responsibility of the student.
Virtual Remote Proctoring for ACCUPLACER® computerized placement test is available for SUNY Erie Online Learning students who require a placement test prior to registering for classes. You must have access to a computer with a web camera and reliable internet access. Please complete the Virtual Remote Proctoring Form and allow five (5) business days for us to process your remote voucher. Your online learning fees cover the cost of the B Virtual Proctoring service.

Requests for proctoring services must be submitted to the Placement Testing Office for review. Upon receiving full proctoring requirements information, you will be notified within five working days if your request is accepted or denied. A proctoring fee is required for both Paper Based and Computer/Internet Based exams. A Request for Proctoring Services must be completed in full by both the student and the academic institution permitting a proctored exam.
Erie Community College accepts credits earned through The College Level Examination Program (CLEP). CLEP enables you to take exams for college credit without attending class and earn up to a total of 30 credits. Students must earn minimum acceptable scores to receive credit. The North Campus testing center proctors a variety of professional and certification exams for PSI Online. These exams are available to students and the community. PSI Exams Online handle all scheduling and the collection of exam fees. The exams take place at SUNY Erie's North Campus Testing Center at 6205 Main St. in Williamsville in room G109.
